Rebels raid farm

COMMUNIST guerrillas raided a government livelihood farm in Monkayo, Compostela Valley, disarmed its guards and took off with communications equipment, police said Wednesday.

No one was hurt during the 7:40 p.m. attack at the Lamdag Agriculture and Eco-Tourism Park in the village of Pasian on Monday, said Monkayo police chief Chief Inspector Roderico Roy Jr.

Roy said one of the guerrillas identified himself as Ka Jinggoy.

The guerrillas also took the firearms of guards assigned to the farm.

CATARMAN, N. Samar

New mayor sworn in

A NEW MAYOR for the town of Lavezares, Northern Samar, was sworn into office on Wednesday after the Commission on Elections 2nd division ruled that he won in the May 2007 elections.

Artemio Balag took his oath before Northern Samar Governor Raul Daza.

The Comelec said Balag had 5,276 votes while his opponent Quintin Saludaga, who is now sitting as mayor, only had 5,149 votes.

Saludaga insisted he was not ready to vacate his post.

He insisted that he was the true winner in the elections and that he was “cheated” in the recount of votes. Rachel Arnaiz, Inquirer Visayas
