SC lifts TRO on Taguig vote recount

Norman BordadoraMANILA, Philippines—The Supreme Court has lifted the temporary restraining order on the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal’s recount of votes cast in the 2007 race for the congressional seat in the second district of Taguig.
The high tribunal, in an en banc resolution, favored Angelo “Jett” Reyes’ petition for the lifting of the TRO.
Reyes was the closest rival of incumbent Taguig Representative Henry Duenas’ in the last elections and was the one who asked the HRET for a recount.
Reyes asked the HRET for the recount of the votes in 170 precincts and has reportedly whittled down Duenas’ lead of more than 1,400 votes to just 32.
Duenas sought the TRO alleging the HRET has shown partiality favoring Reyes.
The Supreme Court granted the TRO in December 2008.
